How A Star Is Born

The Vancouver Courier

It's no secret that becoming a star on the stage, in the movies, or in the music business can be a tough grind. And while the promises of a life filled with wealth, glamour, and extravagance are tempting, one of the most important aspects about becoming a star is remaining true to yourself and finding a personal connection (and fulfillment!) in what you're doing. Possessing a great amount of tenacity and talent-not to mention a wee bit of luck-are key components needed to break into the industry. Introducing children to classes in music, dance, art, and theatre while they're still young is a great start, too.

A Star Performing & Fine Arts Studio prides itself in providing the finest education in dance, drama, and music. From toddlers to seniors, students are nurtured to become artists and well rounded individuals. "It is through the specialized techniques of education at A Star Studio that students are encouraged to reach their own creative, expressive and physical potential. Our philosophy is to inspire, enlighten and instill a lifelong love of the arts. We believe that by providing individualized attention, students learn to apply the techniques and skills in very personalized ways," says director Anita Perel-Panar.

Perel-Panar recalls her own artistic turning point while studying piano at university. A thoughtful professor demonstrated how to create a beautiful sound by guiding Perel-Panar's hand. She could feel how to touch the keys to produce a certain kind of loud or soft sound. This action added a physical dimension to the common aural approach to teaching piano. Perel-Panar realized the importance of going beyond what is common and teach the secrets of how to do things so that it would make sense to the students. It's also all about having fun, says Perel-Panar. "Students are enjoying themselves even as they are working hard to achieve goals. Discipline and the enhancement of self-esteem, resulting from achieving goals and getting better at what you are doing are two of the many byproducts gained through studying the arts. It is also an excellent way to learn the different facets of oneself. It is truly magical," Perel-Panar says.

Working in the arts and expressing yourself is very sensitive, and it is important to have an atmosphere of closeness and trust where the students are encouraged to be cooperative rather than competitive. "In our classes, the students bond together and become a solid group that encourages one another so they can feel free to express themselves and take risks.

"Parent involvement is also welcomed," says Perel-Panar. Parents can help their children progress quickly by taking teachable moments at home to review what their children were learning in the classroom.

Studying dance, drama and music in this way not only enables students to achieve results but also enhances their self-esteem and augments all other facets of their lives. The quality of education at A Star Performing & Fine Arts Studio is such that if students decide to pursue a career in the performing arts they will have the foundation to become a star if they want, says Perel-Panar.
